12 years.

12 years since Sonic Adventure was released, and since then almost every 3D sonic game has had the curse of either being incredibly mediocre, or downright satanically bad.

Even when a 3D Sonic game seemed to be playing ok, it was set back with a horrible gimmick that often times make the gameplay bad.

Well, now Sonic Colors have been released for the Wii, and me and my buddy had the chance to play it, while wearing a nifty little Sonic Hat.

Plot:  Because plotpoints are always the most important point in any Sonic game.  Nah, I'm just kidding.  I will never attempt to take ANY plot seriously from Sonic games.  Thank God there's a simple and straightforward plot this time around.  If they pulled the same shit they did with Sonic 06, and make a confusing convoluted plot involving a princess, I would have to fucking strangle someone.  Eggman created an intergalactic theme park, and is capturing aliens to harness their energy to power the theme park and energize his mind control beam to take control of Sonic's planet.  Yes folks, it seems Planet Mobius is back, and guess what?  Not a single conversation with any human (other than Eggman) in this game.  THANK YOU JESUS.

Graphics:  Good Jumping Jesus, this game is absolutely beautiful.  This is easily one of the best looking games on the Wii.  Every background and level is lush with detail and vivid color.

Music: Not much to say about this, the songs are catchy, gorgeous, and about 6 of them are on my I-Pod now.

Gameplay:  Ah, yes.  The shining moment of the game.  For the most part, it's your typical "run from point A to point B" Sonic game, with a twist.  There are powerups you can collect called Wisps, that allow you to do different things, and they are all useful.  Unlike most 3D Sonic Games with gimmicks, these Wisps are not absolutely necessary to complete the game.  In Unleashed, the boring, slow Werehog stages were absolutely essential to complete the game.  Black Knight required your sword.  Sonic Colors?  There are only a small handful of the over 30 levels that require you to use Wisps to continue.  Speaking of levels, there are 6 worlds, each with 6 levels plus a boss battle.  There are even some moments in stages that switch to class styled 2D gameplay.  The final world has only 3 acts.  Sonic also has a few new moves at his disposal.  Yes, he has his Homing Attack and he can speed boost, but he also has a Slide Kick, a Wall Jump, and a Ground Stomp.  Hmmm, looks like he learned a few things from Super Mario.  Speaking of Mario, I can't help but get a huge Mario Galaxy vibe from this.  There are several levels where Sonic is racing around the stars and hopping from planet to planet, the main antagonist is holding planets hostage, and there is a level where you have to lure a missle into a forcefield to destroy it, like in Galaxy.  Not that it's a bad thing, imitation is the best form of flattery, and Sonic Colors did it quite well.

Voices:  Oh boy, here we go.  Usually, at this point in ANY Sonic game review, the score takes a huge plummet.  However, it's not going to happen this time.  Sonic and friends have all new voices, and they sound great.  Sonic isn't incredibly annoying, and Tails sounds like a real frickin boy this time.  Eggman is still being voiced by the ever lovable Mike Pollock.  Everybody making MORE petitions to change the voices THIS time can fucking blow me.  The scriptwriting is great too.  I found myself laughing, but not at how horrible this game could of been, but at ACTUAL HONEST TO GOD HUMOR.  It's as if I was watching a modern version of SatAM.  The humor is great, the writing is brilliant, and there was barely a dull moment to be seen.  Oh, and Sonic breaks the 4th wall a few times too.

Final Thoughts: This game is fantastic.  Finally, a great Sonic game everyone can enjoy.  No gamebreaking glitches, no earraping voices, no annoying gimmicks, just great action packed fun.  I could only find one major gripe with this game.  It's waaaaaay to short.  Me and Demyx beat it in a little over 5 hours.  Normally I don't have a problem with short games, provided that they have some filler to hold you overafter the game is beaten, but Sonic Colors doesn't have any of that.  There's just the Main Game, and, that's about it.  Other than that, I would highly recommend this game for any Wii owner.  Oh, and the plushie Sonic hat kicks ass too.

Sorry, but I hate this game. Terrible story, boring diaolouge, repetitive gameplay, horrible voice acting except for Mike Pollock, and the music is not even catchy. Just forgettable.

I agree with you on the humor. "No copyright law in the entire universe can stop me!" xD Its about time they got some credited voice actors and not the actors (I use the term loosley) from 4kids.

I got this game for my birthday. I never thought I'd play a game I enjoy as much as Brawl, but Colours proved me wrong. It's also nice that the Wisps can't speak Mobian/English. My only complaint surrounds Asteroid Coaster. (The level you described as being like Galaxy [I see it as a combo of Sonic Extreme and Ristar]) During one of the sections where you have to Homing Attack across a large gap, the move would sometimes feel unresponsive, to the point of falling down the gap below.

I almost died of fanboyishness when I realised that the Pink Wisp gives you a Spin Dash. I was saved from death by the encountering the much-less-awesome. Blue Wisp, who could have been done without in most cases.

While I cannot agree with you on some of your points, I think we can both agree that this is the best 3D Sonic game since Sonic Adventure.

Coincidentally, I wrote up my own review here: [link]

Sonic X is better off being left in the chasm it plummeted into the moment Sonic arrived on Earth.

So they've made two good Sonic games so far, Sonic 4 and now Sonic Colors. I hope it continues, for both the company and the fans of the games.

This game was on my list of games to get and this bumped it up higher on my priory list along with everything else I saw about it.

Are you planning to get the new the Kirby Epic Yarn game? Or Epic Mickey?
SpaxsOldAccount Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2010
 My thoughts exactly. However, it's not short for me, but then again, I keep playing the same levels over again to best my score :P

Sonic had the stomp, slide, and wall jump in Unleashed as well, and pretty much every other non-Wisp power he has in this game, so it's not technically new. I will say I *much* prefer the drift and quick-step controls from Unleashed, but I have nobody to blame but Nintendo for not including enough fucking buttons on their controller this time around.

Also, you say there are "moments" where the game switches to 2D, but it's more like there are "moments" where it switches to 3D, really. Most of the game plays out in 2D, and even when a level has a lot of 3D, the focus on speed (which I wholly approve of when the camera is facing FORWARD) makes them blow by so quickly that it's not even funny.

There is some filler. Exploring the stages and collecting all 180 Red Rings, while often a bit "guide dang it," is just about the most fun you'll ever have on a collect-a-thon, and it unlocks further stages in Game Land, which is always cool. Completing all 21 Game Land levels unlocks Super Sonic (IN A 3D GAME, FUCKING FINALLY... although it's mostly 2D anyway). Getting S-Ranks is especially addictive in this game thanks to the focus on obtaining as many points and score bonuses as possible. I got all of the Red Rings and S-Ranks, and that somehow stretched a five-hour game into a 24-hour game. Still going back and replaying some of my favorite levels, and when I feel like playing through all 40+ stages and bosses in order, there's the Egg Shuttle--seeing how many points I can amass in one straight playthrough is surprisingly addictive, although it takes roughly two hours at my absolute best (I am pretty damn good at Sonic games, too).

Glad to see you enjoyed it. Y'know, there's a faction of the Sonic fanbase--blessedly small, thank God--that prefers the alternate gameplay styles and miscellaneous bullshit from SA1-Unleashed. -.-

I hope they bring back some other characters, a la S3&K, at some point. Tails and Knuckles were awesome when they were essentially Sonic with different abilities, and the level designs they went with in Colors practically BEG for that approach.

I saw the commerical to Sonic Colors and was wondering "I wonder what's for dinner" I mean, "I wonder if BigAl is going to review this game" and here I found the review.

Hmm...Maybe I'll get it for Christmas if I really want it. Sounds like a really good game
BestfanX Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2010
There's actual a hidden unlockable in the game, it requires all of the red rings of the game to unlock though (DS version has concept art, while the Wii version has something completely different).
jrfromny Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2010
o why o why does it only have to be in the wii ):

For once Sega did something good with Sonic this decade! :)
Maybe this could be a fresh new start.... :D

Sounds like plain-and-simple fun is the MO for this game. Maybe I'll give it a try, see if I like it.

Just to take a tangent on the voice thing, in addition to Sonic Redfield de Firenze and Sakura Prower, it turns out that in Free Riders we're treated to:
Roy Mustang as Knuckles (cue the "miniskirts" jokes)
Tsukasa as Cream
Brandon Heat as Shadow
Miyuki... as Rouge... WHAT?
Broly as Omega
Raiden as Silver (walking the edge of a katana with that)
Ox King as Big
Kenshiro as Espio... sorta
and... uh... that one chick with the sexy voice as Blaze (Laura Bailey).
So yeah, you won't see me signing any TCINIS petitions any time soon. :)
Neinteen91 Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2011
Vector still sounds like fucking Pee-Wee Herman, though.

CommanderZaktan Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2010
And yet, some sonic fans are still B$#&^ing about Sonic's voice and want Jason back, this new voice is good, but it sounds like he's an adult now.Btw, what's your favorite power up in the game, Al?
